KEPALA BATAS: Come out and vote wisely for our future, our children’s future and the country – that was Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s advice to Malaysians who will cast their ballots today. “The people will vote on what is best for the country. CM: BARISAN FACING HUGE CHALLENGE IN 10 STATE SEATS
PENANG: Barisan Nasional is under tremendous opposition pressure in 10 state constituencies here, said outgoing Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon. He said after three consecutive mandates given by the people to Barisan, a pendulum swing towards the opposition was not unexpected. “This is indeed the greatest challenge Barisan Nasional is facing since 1990 and I have to admit that there’s a very strong opposition wind blowing now,” he told a press conference yesterday. “But I would rather not predict the outcome as it is yet to be known whether the swing is strong enough to translate into actual votes.”

ANWAR HAS MISREAD HIS AUDIENCE, SAYS RUSLAN
SEREMBAN: One of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s former staunch supporters said the PKR de facto leader has misjudged the audience at his ceramah. Lawyer Ruslan Kassim, one of the founder members of Parti Keadilan, said this has led Anwar to believe that he had a large following and could harbour the ambition of becoming prime minister. He said Anwar’s oratory skills might have pulled the crowds but the turnout it did not mean that the PKR had a strong following.

‘OPPOSITION CAN TAKE PENANG’
BUTTERWORTH: The opposition can capture the Penang Government with a two-thirds majority, said PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Speaking at a ceramah in Seberang Jaya yesterday, he said that his opinion was based on the people’s strong support towards the opposition during the campaign period and also their reception to the idea of equal rights as preached by opposition leaders. He also pledged that the opposition would release those detained under the Internal Security Act “one hour after forming the government” if the authorities were satisfied that they had been detained illegally.

BN WINS FEDERAL GOVT BUT OPPOSITION TAKES FIVE STATES
KUALA LUMPUR: The Barisan Nasional will form the next Government as it has won more than half the parliamentary seats. However, the coalition suffered some of the greatest defeats in its history. Barisan Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, in accepting the results, said this was clear proof of democracy at work in the country.
Among the results yesterday were: The Barisan lost Kedah, Penang, Perak and Selangor. PAS strengthened grip on Kelantan. Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting won in their seats. Among ministers who lost their seats were Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin. Gerakan acting president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon lost to Dr P. Ramasamy in Batu Kawan.

KUALA LUMPUR: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said his successor Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi should accept responsibility for Barisan Nasional’s major losses in the general election and resign. “Just as in 2004, the huge majority was reportedly 100% due to him as said by the then secretary-general of Umno, now he should also accept 100% responsibility,” Dr Mahathir told a press conference yesterday.

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said he will not resign and will continue Barisan Nasional’s struggle. He said that even though Barisan did not obtain a two-thirds parliamentary majority, the coalition did not lose and as its head, he would seek the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s consent to be sworn in as Prime Minister.

PAK LAH SWORN IN AS PM
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was sworn in yesterday as Prime Minister before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin following the Barisan Nasional's victory in Saturday’s general election. Abdullah took the oath of office and loyalty, and oath of secrecy at the Balairong Seri of the Istana Negara here after he was presented with the instrument of appointment. Abdullah, 68, assumes the office of Prime Minister for a second term.

NIK ABDUL AZIZ SWORN IN FOR FIFTH TERM
KOTA BARU: PAS spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat was sworn in as Kelantan Mentri Besar for a fifth consecutive term, making the cleric one of the longest-serving state leaders in the country. Despite concerns over his health after suffering a mild heart attack in 2004, Nik Abdul Aziz, 77, has continued to defy odds and is now presiding over the biggest-ever victory by an Opposition bloc since 1969.

PENANG: DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng took his oath as Penang’s fourth Chief Minister. The swearing-in-ceremony was held before Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas at his official residence Seri Mutiara here at 10.08am yesterday. The black suit affair was attended by the 29 new assemblymen from DAP, PKR and PAS. Guan Eng’s predecessor Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon also witnessed the ceremony.

NIZAR FINALLY SWORN IN
KUALA KANGSAR: State PAS secretary Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin has finally been sworn-in as the 10th Perak Mentri Besar. NEW MB OF SELANGOR
PKR secretary-general Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim taking his oath of office as the 14th Mentri Besar of Selangor at Istana Kayangan in Shah Alam on Thursday. Khalid said the duties of a Deputy Mentri Besar were only to assist the Mentri Besar in carrying out his duties, functions and responsibilities and the government would have four years or more to decide on the deputy, so there was no need to rush into the matter.

ARAU: The Perlis Mentri Besar saga is finally over with the swearing in of Bintong assemblyman Datuk Dr Md Isa Sabu as the new chief executive of the state. Dr Md Isa, 61, replaces Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, 57, the only Perlis assemblyman absent from the swearing-in ceremony at the Arau Palace at 5.40pm yesterday. AHMAD SAID SWORN IN AS TERENGGANU MB
KUALA TERENGGANU: Kijal state assemblyman Datuk Ahmad Said was sworn in Sunday as the new Mentri Besar of Terengganu, bringing to an end the crisis over the appointment that erupted on March 10. All 22 Barisan Nasional assemblymen who had not supported Ahmad's appointment, as well as former Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh whom the BN had instead nominated for the post, attended the swearing-in ceremony. After taking his oath of office as the Mentri Besar, Ahmad, 51, signed the letter of appointment.
